Gynecomastia comes from the Greek words for “woman” and “breast,” and it describes the overdevelopment of the breasts in a man or boy. It is typically caused by a hormonal imbalance. In adult men, however, gynecomastia can be caused by conditions far less benign than puberty. Thyroid problems, certain types of cancer, and cirrhosis of the liver can all cause gynecomastia. Alcohol, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine can also cause the condition. Various medications can lead to the development of enlarged male breasts. If you are a man with oversized breasts, we invite you to make an appointment at our office to learn more about male breast reduction.
Surgery is generally done if more conservative treatments haven’t worked and/or when the patient has very large breasts. During male breast reduction, liposuction, generic breast reduction, or a breast lift may be performed. It all depends on the unique situation, as each male’s body is unique.
Liposuction is a procedure used to remove fatty tissue, and it works on patients whose oversized breasts are mostly fat, which is likely to be the case with obese patients. If the man has excess glandular tissue as well as fat, this can be addressed during the procedure as well.
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon in our state-of-the-art surgical suite. The patient is typically given general anesthesia. The exact details of the procedure will depend on the size of the patient’s breasts and the amount of work they need, among other factors. During a typical male breast reduction procedure, our surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin. He will then sculpt the remainder so it will look natural. Gynecomastia usually affects both breasts, so our surgeon will make sure to give the breasts the same size and shape.
